Alicia Keys Tweets & Deletes XXXTentacion Twitter Post Amid Backlash

Alicia Keys hopped on Twitter to co-sign the late XXXTentacion on Friday, and the internet was stunned. X’s legacy is complicated. Before he was murdered in Florida in June X was awaiting trial for domestic violence charges. Although the artist’s alleged history of abuse should never be excused, his musical talent is difficult to ignore. Keys acknowledged X’s talent when she tweeted, “Such a vibe!! Big love to the talented @xxxtentacion !! Gone too soon.” She accompanied the caption with a video of her and her son Egypt playing the piano while singing “what are you so afraid of.”

Just a few hours after Keys posted the tweet, she deleted it. The internet was not pleased with her support of X, citing his history of abuse as a reason for his cancellation from the culture.”Honestly, of all the days for Alicia Keys to give that XXX abuser a shoutout, why today??” tweeted one user. “Oh man alicia . we believed in you,” exclaimed another. Keys has yet to respond to the backlash, other than deleting the tweet in question. XXXTentacion’s posthumous album Skins dropped in December and hit number one on Billboard‘s 200 chart. It’s currently sitting at the #35 spot after three weeks.
