Executive Producer Lena Waithe Discusses BET’s Upcoming ‘Boomerang’ TV Series

Last year, BET announced Emmy winner Lena Waithe and Oscar winner Halle Berry were spearheading a television reboot of Boomerang. Tequan Richmond (Everybody Hates Chris) and Tetona Jackson (All Night) were picked for the lead roles.
Filming for the 10-episode, half-hour series set in Atlanta has begun. Waithe and Berry are serving as executive producers. Ben Cory Jones (Underground, Insecure) is credited as the showrunner.

“It’s a new take on Boomerang, something fresh for a new generation,” says Waithe in a behind-the-scenes video posted to YouTube. She later adds, “I just think people are going to be blown away by it… I think by the time people get to episode four or five they’re going to be invested in these characters.”

Boomerang is based on the 1992 motion picture of the same name. In the film, Eddie Murphy starred as advertising executive Marcus Graham. Halle Berry and Robin Givens played Graham’s respective love interests Angela Lewis and Jacqueline Broyer.

The TV version centers around Richmond as Jacqueline’s son Bryson Broyer and Jackson as Marcus and Angela’s daughter Simone Graham. Hip Hop artists Joey Bada$$ and Dreezy are part of the cast too.
Boomerang is scheduled to premiere Tuesday, February 12 at 10 pm ET/9 pm CT on BET.
